Abstract:

This monograph on British Ordovician cystoids will appear in three parts. Part 1 describes 6 genera (2 new) and 23 species (8 new, 9 unnamed forms) of the Class Diploporita, and discusses their functional morphology and palaeoecology. Future parts will consider the Class Rhombifera. All diploporite specimens occur with shelly faunas in calcareous sediments of Ashgill age. None is preserved in situ and all lack ambulacral appendages. Diploporita were filter-feeders, attached directly to hard substrates and they respired through their dipores.
