Abstract:
| This work is primarily a systematic revision of the A. H. Foord Collection of Irish Carboniferous nautiloids described in the Palaeontographical Society Monograph Carboniferous Cephalopoda of Ireland (1897-1901). Systematic descriptions of eighteen genera and thirty-eight species from the Ormoceratidae, Carbactinoceratidae, Orthoceratidae, Geisonoceratidae, Pseudorthoceratidae, Cycloceratidae, Oncoceratidae and the Poterioceratidae are given. The original specific descriptions have been revised using both internal and external features. Four new species are described: Ormoceras foordianum, Mooreoceras gracile, Dolorthoceras? cracente, Cayutoceras hollandi. The material studied is widely distributed in the Lower Carboniferous of Ireland, ranging from Courceyan to Brigantian in age. The greatest diversity and abundance of nautiloids occurred in the Late Courceyan to Chadian in association with the Waulsortian Reefs. |
